Project Overview
Context and Challenge: In 2017, AlphaPoint’s flagship product, APEX, a white-label crypto exchange platform, was limited to a browser-based solution. Shortly after I joined the company, we created a mobile companion app, which was developed quickly in native code for Android and iOS, and was feature-poor with light customization options. This restricted AlphaPoint’s ability to offer a bespoke mobile experience to its customers, hindering their business goals and ability to adapt to the rapidly evolving crypto market.
Objective: The primary goal was to transition from the native-code mobile apps to a more flexible, modular mobile platform using a single codebase via React Native. This transformation aimed to allow AlphaPoint’s customers to easily customize their apps, enhancing both brand identity and functionality, and ultimately extending APEX’s reach to a broader user base.
Approach: After an initial phase of managing two separate native applications with minimal features, I proposed a shift to React Native in 2018-19. Though initially paused due to market conditions, the project was picked up in 2022. I led the design of APEX Mobile, focusing on creating a customizable app with interchangeable components. The design emphasized flexibility in color, text, and layout, catering to diverse user needs. Utilizing tools like Storybook, the components were made accessible for customers to visualize and select, facilitating easier app composition.
Outcome: The successful launch of APEX Mobile revolutionized AlphaPoint’s mobile offering. The app’s modular design and customizable componentry placed clients in the design driver’s seat, significantly simplifying the app development process for both clients and developers. This strategic shift not only enhanced the functionality and user experience of the APEX platform but also solidified AlphaPoint’s position in the global crypto market, evidenced by its extensive reach across multiple countries and significant transaction volumes.
Successes & Challenges
Sunset Existing Monolithic App
Set the goal of moving away from an existing mobile app platform that was hard to manage and modify by customers
Devise Plan for New Customer Customizable App
Talking with developers on how to use technology such as React Native code to create a single app for all platforms. Socialize plans with teammates through Lunch & Learns.
Persuade Leadership to Embark on APEX Mobile
Convinced leadership to create a customizable component-based system to create bespoke mobile apps for clients. This was an intensive use of finances.
Putting the Customer in the Design Driver’s Seat
Modular Componentry: Full set of components in figma with semantics colors that clients can use to compose their app.
Easier Developer Implementation
Promoted the use of Storybook to show isolated components to clients and developers so that they can form, in their minds, what their app should be.
Context on APEX exchanges
— 150 exchanges in 35 countries
— 7.3 million end users
— 2 billion USD in transactions per month
— 100,000,000s of single transactions per month

APEX Mobile: Internal Deck to Persuade Upper Management

History of APEX Mobile:
- APEX Mobile started as a set of iOS and Android native apps that had a limited feature set, were hastily built, and were hard to maintain for customers
- A year and a half later, during a Lunch and Learn session, I presented a more ambitious vision of APEX mobile that would leverage React Native as an all-in-one solution that would support more platforms, extend to a tablet app, and would have a richer feature set.
- Unfortunately, we were in the midst of the 2018 crypto winter and the project was shelved.
- In Sept 2023, I was engaged to design the platform.
